Amid Cuba's severe crisis, marked by widespread shortages and frequent blackouts, the Mexican Consulate has extended support to its nationals residing on the island who are experiencing symptoms of stress and depression.

In a note published on its X page, the diplomatic mission asked its citizens in the Caribbean nation if they are experiencing episodes of stress, sadness, or anxiety that affect their daily lives. The consulate added that Mexicans living in Cuba—students, temporary, and permanent residents—can seek assistance through a dedicated hotline staffed by mental health specialists. "They will provide you with professional, safe, and free care," the note emphasized, including the hashtag #EstoyContigo.

Impact of Cuba's Crisis on Foreign Nationals

While the note did not specify the reasons for establishing the hotline, the situation in Cuba has become challenging even for foreigners. Many localities face power outages lasting up to 20 hours a day, accelerating inflation, and widespread shortages define daily life in the Caribbean nation.

Cuba is considered the poorest country in Latin America, according to DatoWorld, an internationally recognized electoral observatory that excludes Haiti from its analysis. Last year, the country had a poverty rate of 72%, a situation that has worsened over the past year.

Renowned American economist Steve Hanke also ranked Cuba as the ninth most miserable country in the world, attributing this to the disastrous economic policies implemented by the communist government in Havana. Hanke's annual misery index for 2022 placed Cuba below Ukraine, Yemen, Argentina, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.

In this context, suicide rates in Cuba have soared. Additionally, there have been strikes reported at La Condesa, a prison for foreigners in Havana, where inmates are demanding extradition to their home countries due to the lack of food and medical care in the facility.
