The government of Santa Clara has announced that each household will receive one liter of dry wine and one liter of jam for the summer season. According to the official Facebook page "Santaclareño," this distribution is part of the authorities' efforts to support activities during the vacation period.

This "extra offer" will be recorded in the ration book, alongside the increasingly meager quota of regulated foodstuffs that arrives—often late—every month. "Other products will be incorporated as per the availability from our suppliers," the note added.

The announcement was met with apathy and distrust by the public. "What an offer. That liter of mango jam is overpriced and of poor quality," a woman remarked. "A great offer," a man commented sarcastically. "Oh, how wonderful. Thanks to this, my daughter's vacation is guaranteed," a young mother mocked.

Cubans are facing a bleak summer this year, with a severe shortage of food, minimal public transportation availability, and constant power outages. This economic crisis has been the government's rationale for reducing recreational offerings during the newly started vacation period.

Struggles and Promises Amidst Economic Crisis

Leaders from the cultural and sports sectors appeared on the Mesa Redonda (Round Table) program and assured that activities are planned, without addressing the high prices that burden the already low wages in the country. Meanwhile, María del Pilar Macías Rutes from the Ministry of Tourism stated that "the crown jewel this season is camping," despite the fact that most resources are allocated to international tourism.

Last December, the Villa Clara government announced a New Year's food offer that was met with dismay due to the exorbitant prices of the limited products available, which were sold exclusively through the ration book. This was a stark contrast to previous years when such products were sold openly. The short list included five pounds of rice at 92 pesos per pound, two pounds of beans—one domestically produced at 270 pesos and another imported at 375 pesos. Additionally, a bottle of Decano rum, garlic paste, seasoned paste, lemon juice, coloring, and a pack of cookies were offered.

The much-publicized offer did not include meats or vegetables, which are traditional components of the Cuban festive table at the end of the year.
