Cuban Influencer's Satirical Critique: "They Took Away the Dumpster, Along with the Oil and Sugar"

Sunday, June 30, 2024 by Hannah Aguilar

Lina Hernández, a 70-year-old Cuban influencer renowned for her humorous yet critical videos about the regime, bid farewell last Thursday to a small landfill that had gained “popular recognition” in her community: “They took it away, but along with it, the oil and sugar went too.”

“We all remember the enormous dumpster that received recognition,” said Hernández on Instagram, showing a smaller trash container placed where the large landfill once stood. “We also have a dilemma: giant dumpster vs. oil and sugar. The choice is yours,” she quipped, humorously highlighting the shortage and delay in the distribution of rationed products through the supply booklet.

The 70-year-old influencer chose to dress in military uniform, donning the distinctive green attire of the Cuban army, to deliver her satirical message. She used the jargon and language characteristic of the officialdom to add a satirical twist to her protest.

Last April, also dressed in the same attire, Hernández posted a video where she “awarded recognition” to a small landfill that, according to her, enjoyed prestige in the community. “To this puddle (leak) and this dumpster, for their years of belonging to our community, we have decided to give recognition. I have spoken,” Hernández declared in a brief clip where she showcased and denounced the regime’s inaction, evident in the deteriorating environmental quality of the neighborhood in Havana.

Recently, Hernández starred in a unique version of the classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid, but this time placing the character in the Mariel Thermoelectric Plant. “Under the sea, there’s no need to work, because on this island surrounded by water, you can’t even find salt,” is how the video begins, parodying the classic The Little Mermaid.
