Experts are warning that this weekend, the state of Florida in the U.S. and the countries in the Gulf of Mexico region will be affected by the arrival of Saharan dust.

Matt Devitt, a meteorologist at Pennsylvania State University, shared on Facebook that the Saharan dust is forecasted to arrive by the end of this week, impacting the region throughout the weekend.

Among the negative consequences of this phenomenon, the specialist cautioned about low air quality, which can exacerbate respiratory conditions, along with hazy skies and dust-laden rain.

He also mentioned that the occurrence of storms decreases, although those that do form could become stronger. Additionally, the sensation of heat intensifies, and the dust can carry bacteria, potentially leading to algal blooms like red tide.

However, he also pointed out some potentially beneficial effects. For instance, Saharan dust weakens tropical systems and reduces their activity due to its dry air layer, which contains 50% less humidity.

Moreover, the iron transported by the dust helps fertilize lands and nourishes phytoplankton in the ocean, which is crucial for oxygen release into the atmosphere.

Devitt explained that the majority of the dust is found at altitudes between 5,000 and 15,000 feet in the atmosphere and travels over 5,000 miles across the Atlantic.

He emphasized that this is not a new phenomenon, but modern technologies allow for more accurate detection and forecasting. Additionally, he noted that on average, more than 180 million tons of dust are transported from Africa each year.

Saharan dust is a phenomenon that has affected Cuba and other nations in the area multiple times.

In previous instances, the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) of Cuba has issued a series of recommendations to prevent harm to the population, including the use of face masks. They have also advised avoiding unnecessary exposure to pollution, particularly for the most vulnerable groups: the elderly, pregnant women, children, and patients with chronic respiratory diseases.

Understanding the Impact of Saharan Dust on the Gulf of Mexico

Here are some common questions and answers about the effects and implications of the arrival of Saharan dust in the Gulf of Mexico region.

What are the health risks associated with Saharan dust?

Saharan dust can lower air quality, exacerbating respiratory conditions. It can also carry bacteria, potentially leading to algal blooms like red tide.

How does Saharan dust affect the weather?

The dust can decrease the occurrence of storms but may make them stronger when they do form. It also intensifies the sensation of heat due to the dry air layer it brings.

Are there any benefits to the arrival of Saharan dust?

Yes, the iron in the dust helps fertilize lands and supports phytoplankton in the ocean, which is crucial for oxygen production.
