In desperate need of victories and brimming with optimism, the Cuban men's volleyball team fought until the final point in the Nations League on Thursday. However, they narrowly lost to the local team, Slovenia (2-3), making their chances of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics seem increasingly distant.

Despite the pressure from the audience, the Caribbean team put up a tough fight against the competition leaders but fell with scores of 22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 31-29, and 8-15 in a closely contested match. Although they only dropped 0.01 points in the world rankings, Coach Jesús Cruz's squad missed the opportunity to close the gap with Serbia (256.50 points) and remained in twelfth place with 245.68 points in the race for the final Olympic spot.

For the victors, opposite hitter Tonček Štern thrilled the home crowd with 21 points, while the Cubans enjoyed a standout performance from outside hitter Marlon Yant, who scored 20 points. Following this result, Cuba still holds slim chances of securing a spot in the French program. They will go all out on Friday against Bulgaria and will close the third and final week of the Nations League on Sunday against Poland.

So far, the teams that have secured their spots for the Olympic Games include: France (as the host), Germany, Brazil, Japan, United States, Poland, Canada, Italy, Slovenia, and Argentina, which clinched its spot today after Cuba's defeat.
