Tuesday, June 18, 2024 by Bella Nunez

The Weather Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology of Cuba (INSMET) reported on Tuesday the occurrence of abundant rainfall across the national territory, with particular intensity in the western part of the country. "The morning will start with predominantly cloudy skies in the west, with some showers in the Isla de la Juventud and the far western areas. It will be partly cloudy in the rest of the country and occasionally cloudy in coastal localities with isolated showers," the institution indicated on its website.

From midday, "the clouds will extend to a large part of the country with some showers and thunderstorms, which will be numerous in the western half of the Cuban territory and may be strong in some localities." Images and videos shared on social media by official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso showcased the torrential rains in municipalities in the center-south of Pinar del Río province.

"There will be rough seas in the south of Isla de la Juventud and Pinar del Río, waves on the rest of the southwestern coast, and slight waves on the rest of the coasts. In areas with rain and thunderstorms, the wind strength and wave height may increase," warned INSMET.

The high humidity will combine with equally high temperatures, with "maximums ranging between 31 and 34 degrees Celsius, higher in inland areas." According to the Institute, nighttime temperatures will be between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius, and will be higher in the southeastern region. Fortunately, there will be light winds (between 10 and 25 kilometers per hour) blowing from the east to southeast in the west and from the northeast to east in inland and north-central localities.

"In the far west and Isla de la Juventud, winds may reach up to 35 kilometers per hour with stronger gusts. Winds will be weak and variable in the rest of the national territory," the Tuesday weather report indicated.
