A Young Cuban Raft Refugee in Miami Could Be the Next Miss Universe Cuba

Tuesday, June 18, 2024 by Bella Nunez

The next Miss Universe Cuba could be a young raft refugee, a humble migrant recently arrived in the United States who is striving to achieve a dream. After 57 years, Cuba will once again have a representative in the Miss Universe pageant, thanks to a competition organized in Miami that will select the candidate from Cuban exiles.

This Monday, the official press conference for the event was held. Venezuelan designer Prince Julio César, President and National Director, announced that Miss Universe aims to include more than 120 countries in the next competition, which will take place in November in Mexico. The Miss Universe Cuba pageant will be held on September 15 in Miami and promises to be a historic opportunity for many young women who have left their country in search of a better future.

"Most of these young women were born in Cuba. They have arrived in the United States by raft, by boat, or through a visa," said Julio César, highlighting the courage of Cuban women and their fight for freedom.

The Miss Universe Organization has decided to open its doors to Cuba, as long as there is no connection with the island's government. The choice of Miami as the venue for the pageant is not coincidental; this city is home to the largest community of Cuban exiles.

The call for participation in the pageant closed a few days ago. More than 500 Cuban women applied. The preselected list includes 100, of which only 20 will make it to the final in September.

This pageant is not only a platform to showcase the beauty and talent of Cuban women in exile but also an opportunity to send a powerful message to the world—proof that despite the challenges, Cuban women can dream and achieve significant goals.

The competition will be broadcast live on Mega TV and will be hosted by Ismael Cala. Additionally, celebrities such as Alicia Machado and Sissi Fleites will be part of the judging panel.
