Father Alberto Reyes: "The Cuban Revolution Is Over, and the Government Knows It"

Sunday, June 16, 2024 by James Rodriguez

Cuban priest Alberto Reyes declared in an interview that the Cuban Revolution is over and the government is aware of it. While the regime may prevent people from protesting and taking to the streets, it cannot stop the populace from yearning for freedom.

Fr. Reyes, a staunch critic of the dictatorship, asserted that Cubans desire a change in the system. However, the government does not allow them to defend their position either politically or legally, as it holds absolute power. "When one longs for freedom, it's like water; it will find a way out. The people are waiting for an opportunity to take a step and live a different reality; you can repress me, but you can't stop me from loving freedom, which will come," he emphasized.

Reyes, a parish priest in the Diocese of Camagüey, gave an interview to the CNCUBATV portal, in which he revealed what he believes is Cuba's biggest problem: despair. "The government has managed to implant in people's subconscious the idea that there will never be a change, that this will not end, that it will last forever. We know this is not true," he stressed.

"People have no way out; the socio-economic situation is increasingly difficult and complicated; the political situation is ever more repressive. It's like a sinking feeling among the people," he elaborated.

The priest expressed that Cubans love their homeland but emigrate because their lives in Cuba are filled with problems and scarcity. "How is this solved? With a free, democratic, and prosperous Cuba. When freedom is the environment in which a society can live, everything begins to flourish," he declared.

"We need real, tangible freedom in Cuba, so that from freedom, we can progress toward the life that Cubans want to live," he detailed.
