House Fire Erupts in Santiago de Cuba

Saturday, June 15, 2024 by Hannah Aguilar

A fire of moderate proportions broke out this Friday in a house located on Santa Úrsula Street, between 5th and 6th streets, in the Reparto Flores neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba, according to journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada on social media.

Images shared by the mentioned source showed the moment when firefighters extinguished the flames coming from the interior of the house. The suspected cause of the fire was the explosion of a recently purchased gas canister, according to the same source.

It appears there were no injuries, although there were material damages, as seen in several published photos. "It's sad, I saw everything and I know that the news spreads and that the media is there for that, but it's sad to see what I saw, people taking selfies instead of helping, while neighbors carried water to subdue the fire before the firefighters arrived. Others were laughing while recording what happened, a bit more awareness, my people," a witness recounted.

"Very unfortunate event. It was heartbreaking to see the owner being taken out crying. Very sad overall. My God, we Cubans really need you," commented another observer.

This is not the first incident of its kind in recent days in Santiago de Cuba. On June 1st, a fire destroyed an apartment in a building in the Antonio Maceo neighborhood.
