A multidisciplinary team at the José Luis Miranda University Pediatric Hospital in Santa Clara has successfully performed the first surgery of a kidney tumor infiltrating the vena cava in a pediatric patient at the institution.

The young patient, Carol Alicha Águila, hailing from the municipality of Ranchuelo, was admitted to the Children's Hospital emergency room on June 4 with an initial diagnosis of nephritic colic, according to a report by CMHW on Facebook.

Life-Threatening Condition Identified

After various studies, a kidney tumor extending to the vena cava was detected, a rare and potentially fatal condition in children, the report explains. Dr. Abel Armenteros, chief of neonatal surgery in the central region and leader of the medical team, emphasized the urgency of the intervention, as the infiltration into the vena cava posed a critical risk to the girl's life.

The complex operation, the first of its kind at this institution, was successfully carried out under the leadership of Cecilio González, a second-degree specialist in angiography at the Ernesto Ché Guevara Cardiocenter, the report details.

The young patient, just four days post-operation, is showing a satisfactory recovery, it adds.

Challenges in the Cuban Healthcare System

Many complex surgeries, such as transplants, have ceased to be performed in Cuba due to the ongoing crisis in the Cuban healthcare system. This achievement is notable within that context, where the doctors' expertise is often hindered by resource shortages and inadequate equipment. Last year, in the same Santa Clara hospital, a mother reported that the necessary medications were unavailable for her three-year-old daughter, who suffers from kidney cancer.
