Cuban Expat Sparks TikTok Debate on Favorite Cuban Sweets

Thursday, June 13, 2024 by Grace Ramos

The Cuban TikToker @robertalbavlogs0, currently residing in Spain, has ignited a conversation on the popular social media platform by sharing a video where he lists seven Cuban sweets that he "absolutely loves" and invites users to share their own favorites.

In a descending order, Robert starts with the seventh spot featuring the "Cuban polvorón," a sweet treat that “has the typical guava jam in the center.” In sixth place are buñuelos, which are especially enjoyed in Cuba “around the New Year, served with syrup or coconut sweet.” The fifth spot is taken by Cuban torrejas, similar to Spanish torrijas.

The fourth position is claimed by bread and milk pudding, which, as Robert notes, is sometimes prepared “filled with guava jam or coconut sweet.” Coming in third is the classic Cuban flan, a dessert that, although also popular in Spain, Robert insists “is not the same as we make it in Cuba.” The second spot goes to flan cake, though it is known by different names in various parts of Cuba. Finally, Robert’s top pick is the capuchino cake, which can be filled with various ingredients but “its texture and flavor are what remain constant.”

Robert’s followers quickly responded with their own suggestions of beloved or longed-for sweets—many of which are sadly difficult or impossible to make due to shortages on the island. “You missed rice pudding, boniatillo, and guava shell,” one commented. Another added, “I missed guava pastry, masarreales, tartlets.” Others suggested, “I would add guava shells.”

What about you? Do you have a favorite Cuban sweet? What would you add to the list?
