Cubana de Aviación has announced that starting June 17, it will resume direct flights between José Martí International Airport in Havana and Tocumen International Airport in Panama City. Although the airline did not specify the type of aircraft for the route, it did confirm that flights will operate twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays, with fares starting at $331 USD.

For this price, travelers are entitled to a "baggage allowance of two suitcases (plus taxes)" and the option to purchase additional baggage on the passenger flight, as well as on the airline's cargo operations. Those interested in more information can contact the airline at +53-76490410.

Cubans need a visa to enter Panama. To obtain the visa, island citizens must follow the procedure established by the Consulate of that Central American country, which includes presenting a valid passport, a visa application form, a recent photograph, proof of economic solvency, and other requirements that may vary depending on the type of visa requested.

In recent years, the number of Cubans visiting Panama for so-called shopping tourism has surged. According to data released in April by the Visitors Passes Section of the Security Directorate, the Colón Free Zone (CFZ), a regional hub for shopping and tourism, saw Cubans leading the visits to Panama's Free Trade Zone in 2023, with 15,042 visitors, followed closely by Ecuador, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Peru.

The marked Cuban presence in this free trade zone began to grow several years ago when Panama relaxed entry requirements for Cubans; it has not ceased despite the creation of MLC stores by the Havana regime to curb the "leak" of foreign currency. With the authorization of SMEs and the failure of these stores, exports from these countries have surged again.
