The Cuban commander Ramiro Valdés has called upon Cuban families to conserve electricity amidst the severe energy crisis gripping the nation. During a session of the National Energy Council held at the headquarters of the Cuban Electric Union (UNE), Valdés sent a message to families urging them to "make rational use of energy wherever they are."

The Cuban regime reinforced Valdés' plea on the social media platform X, stating, "Just by turning off an unnecessary light, we could significantly help alleviate the burden on Cuba's shoulders, a country that is doing everything possible to overcome the current situation for the welfare of the people."

Despite promises made by authorities to minimize blackouts during the summer, more than half of the country still experiences daily power outages. The regime has already acknowledged that achieving zero blackouts under current conditions is not feasible.

The Cuban Electric Union (UNE) released a disheartening report on Tuesday, warning of potential blackouts during peak hours that could reach as high as 1,440 MW, against a demand of just over 3,000 MW. The situation does not improve significantly during the day, with expected disruptions amounting to around 950 MW.

Last week, UNE Director Alfredo López Valdés advised, "Those who have a split air conditioning unit should use it rationally, at 24 degrees in a sealed room, to support the country." According to López Valdés, he is not "blaming the people" for the increased demand but emphasized that "conservation is one of the most important resources Cuba still has."

These statements come amidst a critical situation in the national electro-energy system, compounded by fuel shortages and the shutdown of several generating units due to "breakdowns or maintenance." This has resulted in blackouts lasting up to 20 hours in various parts of the country.

The energy crisis keeps the Cuban populace in a state of perpetual distress, with reports of power outages occurring around the clock. Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel has had to admit that the recent electricity cuts have been "terrible."
